The search for other sources of funding challenges museums and galleries to think creatively about how they are run. If small museums and galleries around the country are to survive they don’t just need to find new funding they need to find a new way of working, a model that involves more volunteers, one that is deeply involved in the lives of people in surrounding communities and one that can excite the interest of local businesses. Many regional museums are approaching the point where it will be hard for them to be bigger than the communities they can inspire, persuade and excite into volunteering, supporting, donating and engaging.
Across Britain there are institutions which are already at that point - organisations who may have developed practices/models which our regional museums and galleries might be able to learn from: football clubs.
